At our Beach House, the signature scent is sun tan lotion – a delicious blend of tropical, fruity and coconut smells that evoke the feeling of summer. This fragrance always takes us back to that perfect moment on the beach, with the soft white sand at your fingertips and the view of the sparkling turquoise ocean playfully calling you in. This is what summer is all about!
But besides being the perfect beach fragrance, anyone who has visited Cayman knows that sun tan lotion is a necessity. Plus with the intensity of the Caribbean sunshine, it should be reapplied often throughout the day. We have partnered up with Sharron Eyers of Le Visage, the luxury cosmetics and skincare boutique located in Camana Bay, for some advice on ensuring a healthy tan and glowing beach skin. See her top tips below!
Choose the right protection
Wearing sunscreen is essential for your skincare and sun protection. You should use it every day, especially when you’re spending time outdoors.
Choose products with a high SPF
SPF refers to the length of time that sunscreen protects the skin. Always use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
Apply it often
In real life, sunscreens aren’t always as effective as the SPF would indicate. If you’re swimming, sweating a lot, or rubbing your skin with a towel, the sunscreen is going to dissipate. Reapply this form of sun protection every two hours – more often if you’re swimming or perspiring a lot.
Buy a broad-spectrum sunscreen
These sunscreens will help block UVB and UVA rays. UVB light is the primary cause of sunburns, and protecting skin against UVA light plays an important role in preventing wrinkling and signs of ageing. Choose a product that contains zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or avobenzone, also known as Parsol 1789.
Apply it with your makeup
If you use moisturisers or other skin care products in the morning, it’s fine to apply your sun protection sunscreen at the same time. First, apply topical medications if you use them. Let them dry, then apply alpha hydroxy acid or other anti-ageing creams if you use them. Be sure to follow with a moisturiser, especially if you’re using alpha hydroxy acids, which may have a drying effect on the skin. Then apply the sunscreen, followed by any makeup you’re going to wear.
Give it time to work
In general, sunscreen is most effective when it’s absorbed into the skin. Rub it on about 20 minutes before you go outside.
Sharron recommends using Elemis Liquid Layer SPF30 for the face (which can be purchased at Le Visage) and we suggest using Sun Bum’s line of sun tan lotions for the body (available at our resort). She says it is important to use different sunscreens for the face and body since the skin on our face is thinner and more delicate. Thanks for the tips, Sharron!
But after all that, if you find yourself having too much fun in the sun, don’t despair – our Beach House offers a Sun Burn Relief Station, located near the Towel Hut next to the pool. We offer natural remedies such as cold towels, freshly cut cucumber and Aloe Vera leaves to help relieve sunburns as well as local, organic and paraben-free skincare products to help soothe and moisturise sore skin. Don’t forget to check it out the next time you visit us!
