The Artificial Reef Project, which is just a short swim away from our resort, is the perfect setting to capture magical moments under the sea. Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet and discover the fascinating world of underwater photography!
Here are our top tips on taking beautiful underwater photos:
Make sure you shoot in safe waters. Whether you decide to take photographs in the ocean or a pool, always be aware of your surroundings and the limit of your swimming abilities. Also, learn to control your buoyancy. Mastering the ability to float neutrally in the water is essential to achieving good results. This will allow you to focus on capturing the beauty that surrounds you.
Have enough light. The best time to shoot underwater are on bright afternoons, when sunlight travels intensely and aplenty in the water. If conditions aren’t in your favor, don’t be afraid to use your camera’s flash to bring out the colors. Flash is daylight-balanced and provides a great source of light to illuminate your underwater scene.
Don’t be scared of getting too close. You are never as close as you think when taking pictures underwater. The details that you can capture by getting near to your subject can be amazing. Zoom with your flippers, not your camera’s zoom. Also, shoot at upward angles. This will allow you to fill the frame and get separation of your subject from the background.
Learn to be patient and take your time. You may remain in one place for some time before you get that one spectacular shot. Let the marine life get comfortable with you. Remember you are a guest in their home, so it will take some time for them to relax with you in their setting. Be patient and wait for the shot; it will be well worth it in the end!
