Awakening 2017 Book Club: A New Earth By Eckhart Tolle

This year, we have welcomed 2017 with open arms. We know that life can be crazy at times, but we are dedicating the time and energy to look within. 2017 has been our year of Awakening.

As part of this year’s Beach House theme, Awakening 2017: A Year With Intention, we have been seeking out different sources of inspiration to help us find our inner calm. One of the ways that we are doing this is poring over books from our Holistic Library, found at our signature Dark Night events taking place on the Friday closest to the New Moon. We believe that reading is dreaming with your eyes open, so we chose some thought-provoking titles to stir our soul and imagination.

Every month we will be discussing a book that has captured our hearts. To start off, we read Eckhart Tolle’s bestselling spiritual guide, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. Here we share some of our favourite passages and what it means to us on our journey to self-discovery.

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.”

We love this quote because it makes us think deeply about our perception of happiness. Is it something external that happens to us based on circumstance or is it something within our control? We like to think that we can choose the feelings and thoughts we have about a situation and from that, stems happiness, contentment and pure joy.

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”

This quote deeply resonates with us – we believe that abundance breeds abundance. We recognise the importance of being grateful everyday for all the wonderful things that we have in our life and believe that this is the true path to prosperity.

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.”

This passage inspires us to think about the decisions that we make in the here and now. As humans, we often question whether the choices that we make in the moment are right. One positive way of looking at it is that every decision made at the time is the correct one because that is what was felt as meaningful and significant. Hindsight may reveal a different choice but in that particular moment, the choice was right for me.

“Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.”

We really like this sentence. At times, letting go may seem like an act of weakness or cowardice because it signifies release. But in many situations in life, allowing yourself to stop holding on is one of the most powerful things that you can do. Resistance and struggle are not always signs of strength.

“You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle.”

This passage really makes us think about our connection with the universe and everything around us. We love how it inspires us to think outside of ourselves and rather, acknowledge individual people as entities with a much bigger purpose. We are all connected in an infinite network of organic matter – this is truly a mind-blowing miracle.
