One of the most enjoyable activities that you can do when visiting (or living in!) a tropical island is taking the time to stop at a roadside vendor to indulge in the delicious fruits and vegetables that are in season. The lush and temperate weather of our beautiful island creates ideal conditions for the cultivation of exotic fruits and vegetables. Visiting one of these stands as you drive along West Bay Road or on your way to Rum Point, you are presented with a rainbow of colours – from bright reds, oranges, yellows, to vibrant purples and greens.
Luckily for us in Cayman, the farm-to-fork movement is in full force and there are many places where you can find local and sustainably grown produce. One of our favourite spots to explore is the Farmers and Artisans Market, which takes place every Wednesday in Camana Bay. During a recent visit, we were able to sample some of the local favourites including guinep, coconut, mango, avocado, breadfruit, kale, pumpkin and melon. It was not only a feast for our eyes but our palate!
On Saturdays, The Grounds in Lower Valley in Bodden Town hosts The Market, where dedicated and skilful farmers along with crafts and culinary artisans come together to offer local fare, unique souvenirs and hand-made and traditional crafts. It is a wonderful place to unwind with friends and family (as well as stock up your fridge) on the weekend.
Local grocery stores such as Kirk Market and Hurley’s also offer products from local growers. Their produce aisles are definitely worth checking out if you are looking for homegrown ingredients for your next meal.
Last but not least, visit the fresh Fish Market in George Town (next to Cayman Cabana) where fishermen sell their locally caught fish including wahoo, mahi-mahi and red snapper. Not only do you get to hear some great stories from the fishermen, they dish out valuable advice on how to prepare the fish and the best way to cook it.
