At our Beach House, we believe in the power of plants and herbal remedies. Here, we find out what exactly tinctures are and discover the benefits of these bottles of goodness!
Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally. They are usually extracted in alcohol, but they can also be extracted in vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar (non-alcohol). There are tinctures to help with different ailments and conditions, such as boosting immunity, increasing energy, detoxifying, aiding in sleep and relieving stress – just to name a few!
Tinctures are usually taken by the dropperful (also known as a squeeze). A dropperful is the amount of liquid that fills the glass tube of the dropper when the bulb on the dropper top is squeezed and released. The liquid may fill the glass tube only a small portion of the way, but that is considered a “dropperful”. A dropperful equals approximately 30 drops.
The use of tinctures to administer herbs has several benefits when compared to teas or capsules. First, tinctures are easy to use. They do not need to be prepared multiple times per day like a tea, and do not present difficulty in swallowing like a capsule.
Second, tinctures often come in small dropper bottles, making them much easier to transport for dosing throughout the day than teas or capsules. Many herbs do not taste very pleasant as a tea—such as bitter herbs to enhance digestion—so people are more likely to take herbal medicine as tinctures.
Third, tinctures are the only way to get fresh plant medicine. And because tinctures are so concentrated, the amount of medicine that one needs to consume is much less.
Finally, tinctures are easy and convenient to use. Because they are taken directly under the tongue, they enter the bloodstream much more directly than by any other means. This means that the person can usually feel the therapeutic benefit of the herbal extracts quicker.
We are also excited to announce that we will be sharing our unique approach to the ultimate holistic wellbeing experience with the launch of our spa this summer. The current spa, La Mer, will be closed from the 28th of April and we will be unveiling this much-anticipated project around the 1st of July.
We are proud to be partnering with Naturopathica, a company whose philosophy is inspired by herbalism and beauty rooted in wellness. Their Founder Barbara Close founded Naturopathica more than 20 years ago with a simple mission: to educate people on the benefits of holistic health and its connection to beauty. At our Beach House, we are very much aligned with Naturopathica’s approach and advocate this holistic perspective to wellness, which is why we thought they would be the perfect collaborators for our spa!
A central part of the spa experience will be our Vitality Bar, which will feature herbal tinctures, organic teas and locally-made kombucha on tap. We had the pleasure of introducing some of the amazing herbal tinctures from Naturopathica at a recent event for the local community that we hosted at Anchor & Den. The feedback we received that night was fantastic and we have no doubt that the tinctures will go down a treat when they are showcased in their full glory at our Vitality Bar.
We can’t wait to sample these drops of wellness at our Vitality Bar soon!
